Day 10: Thu 20 Aug - Windorah to Stonehenge, 164km

9 - 24 degC

Early morning walks followed by coffee then breakfast. As we didn’t have far to travel we were in no particular hurry. We were on the road not long after 8:30am and took a slow drive to Jundah where we brewed up in the van and then wandered up and down the main road which was the highway (Thomson Development Road). That didn’t take very long and we were back on the road.

We arrived in Stonehenge just before midday. The caravan park here lets you find your own spot and then you go over the road to the Community Centre and pay. If closed, there is an honesty box. $18 for a drive-through site with power and water is very good for this far away from anything really real.

After lunch we set off on the bikes to check out the area. We cycled out to the Address Book which is just a little hill where people have collected rocks and spelled out their names; a little bit different to the Stonehenge we are more familiar with. Greg played with the rocks - see pic.

Back into and through town out to the Thomson River which is more of a stagnant pool than a river at this point in time. Allegedly, when the river is in flood it is 22km across and over 6m deep in some places.

As we were on the bikes and it was a rather rocky dirt road we did not venture any further. Just down the road though is Jorn - the Defence early warning over the horizon radar site. Probably wouldn’t have been able to see much anyway, being a Defence site.

A couple of hours of down-time before making ourselves a little bit respectable to visit the Stonehenge Pub for dinner as it is Thursday night. Greg had a seafood basket and Wendy had a chicken schnitzel, some red wine and a black beer. Both meals were very good, considering it is a one woman show. Nice work Stonehenge.
