Day 9: Wed 19 Aug - Windorah

11 - 24 degC, gusty winds from about 11am

Slept in a bit this morning, how awful! After breakfast, we set off on the bikes to explore Windorah. Solar Farm was first stop, only a few km out of town, and unfortunately no longer working, but still an attraction. See pics for details.

Back into town to the Windorah Parklands, a project to beautify the entrance to Windorah and to provide a pleasant, informative place for visitors to enjoy. Alongside that is the water treatment plant, the painting on the tower is OK, but not the same as a silo or other water towers we have seen.

We then rode the streets of Windorah to check out the various sights: Health Centre complete with COVID-19 testing area, school (no photo), recreation area and sportsground, Churches x2, Community Centre, etc. Interestingly, there are two supplies of water to Windorah. The main water supply is from Cooper's Creek; it is treated for household use and another pipe sends untreated Creek water for garden and outside use.

We thought about riding out to Sando's Sandhill, about 12km out on the road to Birdsville, but only went about 2km out due to the wind. We were also going to go for a drive on the Birdsville Road to the end of the sealed bit, however, decided we needed to leave some things for another visit.

We did do about half of the 12km nature drive and saw some of the trees along the way; one being the iconic Coolibah, and there was definitely shade under it!

After lunch, Wendy did some more washing whilst Greg went for another ride.

The afternoon was spent relaxing on the leeward side of the van (out of the wind).

Windorah translates to "big fish" and refers to the yellowbelly found in Cooper's Creek
