Day 5: Mitchell to Augathella, 184km

13-20 degC

Quite a blustery storm last night; the wind brought us some rain, not a lot though. It was nice to see the countryside wet when we woke up. We were both up early as it wasn’t so cold.

Last night we made a decision to take a road we’ve not yet travelled, so after breakfast we were on the road at 8am. The road from Mitchell to Morven was a pleasure to travel on and although being stuck behind a road train (triple) we were still able to travel at our usual speed.

Met the biggest long paddock herd of cattle and some horses we’ve seen for a while; they would have numbered in their thousands. And they all looked in very good condition.  We stopped in Morven for a wander and a brew in the van. There was a coffee van outside the public amenities however, it started to drizzle so we opted for shelter in the van.

Another 80km odd and we were in the thriving metropolis of Augathella. Made a beeline for the Augathella Warrego River Picnic/Camping Area, another donation camp.

After a light lunch we went for a ride around the town to see the sights. There were lots of meatants and a painted water tower. Greg got a slow leak puncture on his rear tyre on our way home; the first on this bike since he bought it in June last year.

As it is Saturday, we enquired at the pub as to whether we need to book and were told to just turn up. So that's what we did. A fantastic meal at the Ellengowan Hotel; we had to go for a walk to the water tower to see it under differet lights, and then back to the van.
