Day 14: Mon 24 Aug - Longreach to Winton, 180km, total towed: 1 980km

7 - 23 degC

We opted to just get up, have breakfast, and go. After refuelling, we were finally on the road about 8:30am on the road to Winton, another new road for us. The road was very good for the majority of the way. We saw LOTS of dead kangaroos, no live ones, a very big cow looking for grass on the highway and a few emu. A few dead pigs too.

We stopped for mornos about 55km from Winton in a rest area complete with loos and bins. Sometimes we both just shake our heads - there was rubbish and toilet items strewn all over the place.

Upon arrivel at Winton, we thought we might like to stay at the Showgrounds however, when we drove past, there were no vans there, so we continued to the first van park just to have a look. It was pretty empty at that time so we booked in. Not cheap, but not as expensive as Longreach; we are in the Outback though. Sites are very well set out and even include a separate parking spot for your vehicle.

Whilst Wendy was cooking lunch, Greg got itchy legs and just had to get out on the bike and did a recce.

After lunch and a rest, we hit the town on the bikes. It is not a big town, and we did the Waltzing Matilda Centre first, then the rest of the free sites: QANTAS Memorial Cairn, North Gregory Hotel, Jolly Swagman Statue, Arno's Wall, The Winton Club (closed), and some others.

Tomorrow we do The Australian Age of Dinosaurs tour about 20km out of Winton, and on Wed, we will do the Dinosaur Stampede Tour, bout 110km from Winton.  Had to book and pay online due to COVID-19 restrictions.
